Highlighting strong Slovenia-Kenya cooperation, the intensive 4-day programme drew significant interest, with over 650 initial applicants, a new record for POTC and a testament to the high demand for this type of training, which we first developed in 2023 as one of the first centres to do so.
A dedicated cohort of 16 experts, active in peace and security fields with organisations such as UNMISS, UN-Habitat, and the African Union, completed the training. Participants built a strong grasp of climate science fundamentals, applied risk-assessment and resilience tools to conflict-affected settings, and explored strategies to integrate climate-responsive measures into mission planning. Understanding these dynamics is vital because climate change acts as a global threat multiplier that intensifies resource scarcity, food insecurity, and social tensions in vulnerable regions. Equipping peace operations to assess and manage these environmental risks is essential for fostering sustainable, long-term stability.
We sincerely thank IPSTC for hosting us, our expert trainers for guiding the sessions, and all participants for making this critical climate security initiative a success.
