Advancing the Nursing and Midwifery Education and Profession in the Republic of North Macedonia
(2024-2025)
A bilateral technical cooperation project has been established between the Republic of Slovenia and the Republic of North Macedonia under the auspices of the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ International Development Cooperation program to support efforts in strengthening nursing and midwifery education and establishing a system for recognising the professional qualifications of nurses and midwives in the Republic of North Macedonia.
The project aims to enhance the legal framework to ensure compliance with EU Directives, strengthen institutional capacities, and empower all stakeholders to implement education and regulatory reforms in the nursing and midwifery sector in the Republic of North Macedonia. These efforts are encapsulated within a broader project framework aimed at enhancing the nursing profession’s standards and practices.
The project has three objectives:
Objective 1: Recommendations for the transformation of the educational system of undergraduate studies in nursing and midwifery in the Republic of North Macedonia.
Objective 2: Empowering a pilot group of nurses in a family medicine practice to transfer the concept of a family medicine nurse practitioner to the local context.
Objective 3: Establishment of regulation of the nursing and midwifery professions in the Republic of North Macedonia

The project resulted in a document entitled ‘Analysis of the existing higher education programs for nurses and midwives in North Macedonia according to the requirements of the European Directive for regulated profession’. The document analyses the education systems for nurses and midwives in the Republic of North Macedonia, focusing on the comparability of knowledge, skills and educational content of study programmes in accordance with Directive 2005/36/EC and its amendments of 2013 and 2024.
The analysis includes a comparison of educational programmes and identification of differences between educational institutions in the country. The aim of the document is to ensure that educational content is harmonised and enables high-quality and comparable education that meets European guidelines.
The author of the document is Prof. Dr. Brigita Skela Savič, Research Advisor and Expert in Nursing Education at the Angela Boškina Faculty of Health in Slovenia.
