POTC on Ukrainian soil for the first time after 4 years of cooperation with Ukrainian security authorities
The training activity titled “Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management” was intended for members of the Ukrainian civil protection service (SESU) and experts in the field of prevention and preparedness for natural disasters.
Although in wartime, the scope of Ukrainian civil protection tasks has been expanded to include assistance to the population, these types of training activities remain crucial even in such circumstances, as war further increases the complexity of responding to natural disasters and their consequences. At the same time, training is an important instrument for coordinating Ukrainian response systems with the EU crisis response mechanisms.
The implementation of this training programme delivered by POTC is one of many concrete examples of bilateral assistance provided by the Republic of Slovenia to Ukraine. The fact that the activity is taking place on Ukrainian soil is an additional expression of Slovenia’s solidarity with Ukraine.
We trained members of the Ukrainian civil protection service in the following areas:
👉 understanding complex climate-related disasters and comprehensive approaches to greater preparedness, in line with the Sendai Framework,
👉 data collection, mapping, forecasting, and early warning mechanisms,
👉 European crisis management mechanisms, preparedness and response to natural and other disasters,
👉 mechanisms for the protection of the civilian population,
👉 risk assessment in complex environments with multiple sources of risk, including the current war.
The key objective of the training was to strengthen the Ukrainian civil protection’s capacity to prepare for disasters in advance, respond effectively, and recover more quickly.
The training took place in two sessions – the first between February 9 and 11, and the second between February 12 and 14.
