Digital Diplomacy Bootcamp 2.0 wraps up in Ljubljana

Digital Diplomacy Bootcamp 2.0 organised by the Centre for European Perspective and supported by the U.S. Department of State concluded in Ljubljana on Friday, 13 April 2018. A 4-day training »Enhancing Digital Diplomacy Activities in the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe” brought together over 70 PR representatives, communication officers and digital diplomats from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine and Slovenia.

The training covered theoretical and practical aspects of digital communications, digital journalism, story-telling, strategic communications planning, video-editing, photography and design. It evolved and upgraded the understanding of communications theory, digital crisis communications and digital journalism, but also offered a chance to improve and boost the skills in photographydesign and video-editing. Participants were challenged in digital campaign development, but also actively discussed the phenomenon of misinformation, social media usage, audience identification, understanding and targeting.

Press and public affairs products and their development attracted the attention of participants particularly because of its applicability in their everyday professional life. The last day of the training took place in Ljubljana and focused on teamwork, simulations and presentations, where the participants had to show their best and use the knowledge and skills acquired during the training.

The concluding session and certificate ceremony were joined by Ambassador Brent R. Hartley, U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Slovenia and Dr Gorazd Justinek, director of the Centre for European Perspective.

The training is second of its kind, following the Digital Diplomacy Bootcamp conducted in November 2017 and represents an upgrade of an established cooperation between the Centre for European Perspective and the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy in Ljubljana.

Bled again hosts digital diplomats from across the region

Digital Diplomacy Bootcamp 2.0 organised by the Centre for European Perspective and supported by the U.S. Department of State kicked off today in Bled, Slovenia. PR representatives, communication officers and digital diplomats from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine and Slovenia gathered for a 4-day training »Enhancing Digital Diplomacy Activities in the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe”.

The training covers theoretical and practical aspects of digital communications, digital journalism, story-telling, strategic communications planning, video-editing, photography and design. On Tuesday morning, participants were addressed by the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Slovenia Brent R. Hartley and President of Executive Board of the Centre for European Perspective Špela Lajmiš.

Communications theory, digital crisis communications and digital journalism were on the agenda of the first day of the training, while the second day brought challenging tasks for the participants – photography training, infographic/design training and camera training for comms professionals took participants to unexpected spots around Bled. Another challenge for the participants is digital campaign development.

Misinformation and successful identification and response to them were addressed by Matt Jacobs from the US Department of State. As a representative of the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms Miriam Morgan presented the social media strategy during the UN Security Council Seat campaign.

Third day of the training offered an insight into development of press/public affairs products with Jared Caplan, U.S. Department of State, London Regional Media Hub and Instagram training with Dayna Geldwert of Instagram.

Last day, taking place in Ljubljana was devoted to group work, simulations and presentations where the participants had to show their best and use the knowledge and skills acquired during the training. 2nd edition of the digital diplomacy training for PR representatives of Western Balkans and Eastern Europe

Centre for European Perspective is joining forces with the U. S. Department of State for the second edition of training within the project »Enhancing Digital Diplomacy Activities in the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe”. The programme aims to strengthen the capacities of the public institutions to plan, coordinate and prepare digital campaigns through various digital communication tools.

The first training that was held in Bled, Slovenia, from 28 to 30 November 2017, offered knowledge about the digital presence, European digital media landscape, audience identification, story-telling, digital ecosystem and strategy creation, digital campaigns, visual contents and digital media.

An advanced public relations training, focusing primarily on digital diplomacy, will take place in Bled and Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 10 to 13 April 2018. Besides theoretical communication framework this training will develop in-depth knowledge on digital journalism, digital crisis communication, photography and info-graphics design, camera usage, digital campaigns and media.

Experts from the U.S. Department of State, private sector, academia and returning participants as well will share their knowledge and experiences with digital representatives from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine and Slovenia.

Digital diplomats enhancing diplomacy in the region

Digital diplomats, PR representatives, digital media editors and other digital devotees gathered in Bled, Slovenia this week for the training course “Enhancing Digital Diplomacy in the Western Balkans and Eastern European Countries”. The training took place between 28 and 30 November and attracted over 70 participants from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Ukraine and Slovenia. Through a training, covering a range of topics from theory of public relations and public diplomacy to specific use of digital tools and practical examples of digital campaigning, high-ranking officials from nine participating countries boosted their communication skills and established a network of digital diplomacy professionals.

The morning of the first day was devoted to introductions by the representatives of the organizers, Gautam Rana, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Slovenia, Sabina R. Stadler, Director-General of the Directorate For Multilateral Affairs, Development Cooperation and International Law, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, and Peter Grk, Secretary General of the Bled Strategic Forum and Member of Executive Board of the Centre for European Perspective.

Afterwards, the participants were absorbed in the nature of the digital future, discussing why is it important to be present online, what is the state of the digital media in Europe and who are the audiences that the institutions would target. Story-telling, misinformation and digital ecosystem building were also addressed by a number of excellent practitioners, among them Shawn Powers, Lee Nilsson and Matt Jacobs of the U.S. Department of State, Mathias Lüfkens, Burson-Marsteller, Marko Zoric, BBC YouTube Editor, and Nataša Briški and Aljaž Pengov Bitenc from Metina lista.

The second day of the training brought a close-up view on the digital campaigning, starting with a session on the interconnections between digital campaigns and official development cooperation on the case of Slovenia, where dr. Melita Gabrič, Simona Vučak and Miriam Možgan of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia presented the activities in the framework of Slovenian diplomacy. In the afternoon, participants were given different scenarios through which they had to build a digital campaign, answering the most important questions that appear in the process of planning. Facebook keynote on the importance of digital communities was delivered by Sharon Yang from Facebook.

The last day focused on the visual and video content and YouTube as a channel of communication featuring workshops with Marko Zoric, BBC YouTube Editor and Oliver Mertz of U.S. Department of State. Aljaž Pengov Bitenc and Nataša Briški from Metina lista reflected on their path of establishment of an online media platform and Jeremy Caplan from Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism, CUNY Graduate School of Journalism engaged participants in an interactive learning-by-doing presentation of online production tools.

The project is organised in cooperation with the U.S. Department of State and is also a part of the CEP program activities financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia in the scope of international development cooperation.
