Seminar on Cooperation with Local Communities to be held on 21 May at Jable Castle

On Wednesday, the 21st of May 2025, POTC will host expert speakers at Jable Castle who will give us an up-close look at engaging local communities in peacekeeping and peacebuilding processes.

The involvement of local communities in peacekeeping and peacebuilding processes is crucial for the successful implementation of peace operation mandates and missions. The participation of local community representatives contributes to the understanding of the protection needs of communities, fosters the participation of all subsystems of society, and thus contributes to the sustainability of results on the ground and to increasing the legitimacy of local authorities and the international community. Community involvement – understood not only as a one-way process but as a real process of involvement in decision-making – is at the heart of contemporary peace operations approaches and touches on various cross-cutting themes (gender roles, protection of civilians, protection and inclusion of vulnerable groups, etc.). The seminar aims to provide participants with concrete methods and mechanisms for engagement and participation used by the representatives of Slovenian state authorities, constituent bodies and implementing agencies in their work with local stakeholders.

The full-day seminar will introduce participants to ways in which they can contribute to peace operations by working with local stakeholders and will also address ways to support inclusion, resilience, accountability and local ownership. Finally, participants will understand how to help mission and operations staff develop the relevant skills needed to engage successfully with local communities.

Hot drinks, refreshments and lunch will be provided. Business casual attire is recommended for civilian staff, and work uniform for members of the Slovenian Armed Forces and the Police.
