The training is supported by the European Union Civilian Training Initiative (EUCTI), which aims at enhancing the abilities of the deployed civilian staff in EU CSDP, OSCE, UN, AU and other crisis management missions to work in an efficient, effective and sustainable manner to implement their respective missions’ mandates.
More specifically, the cooperation between POTC and the NIWPC, together with the support of EUCTI, will focus on delivering the Training of Trainers (ToT) course. The ToT course is designed to strengthen the training skills of members of international crisis management missions and peace operations to either support them in designing and delivering the ToT courses or to equip the subject matter experts with skills, knowledge and attitudes to be more effective trainers.
The target audience of the ToT is personnel from the NIWPC, Namibian police, military and civilian structures who are involved in designing, planning, organising and delivering training programmes in their respective training structures. The course will come for first-time trainers and those with more experience. All participants will be given the chance to practice, acquire and develop new competences and/or build upon existing knowledge, skills and experience.
The training will cover the designated 7 ToT Modules (Module 1 – Being a Trainer, Module 2 – Teaching and Learning Theories, Module 3 – Techniques to Use in a Training Session, Module 4 – Managing the Training Environment and Effective Communication, Module 5 – Planning, Preparation of a Training Session, Module 6 – Delivery of a Training Session, and Module 7 – Assessing Learning and Evaluating a Training Event) as well an additional Module 8 »Mission Environment Training Specifics« which will take a holistic look at the entirety of the other modules and apply the mission environment specifics to them.
The POTC Team, together with the trainers, is looking forward to cooperating with our Namibian partners and delivering this essential training for Namibian peace operations personnel in Windhoek.
This training is supported by the European Union Civilian Training Initiative (EUCTI).

After last year’s first training module on International Humanitarian Law, this year’s module will focus on specific topical areas of this overarching theme. The aim of the second module is to cover the topics that have been identified as the most legally pressing for personnel of peace operations in the field.
The trainees of the International Humanitarian Law training will learn about:
-
the status of persons in armed conflict;
-
direct participation in hostilities;
-
the treatment of the dead;
-
the status of prisoners of war – POWs;
-
protection of cultural heritage;
-
obligations of the defender;
-
perfidy;
-
and much more.
The International Humanitarian Law training will also make use of new teaching methods and an updated interactive approach to learning, with the aim of providing mission members with a holistic understanding of real day-to-day legal issues from the perspective of international humanitarian law in the event of escalations in the field. The learning outcomes will directly impact the capabilities of military personnel who are soon to be deployed in Slovenian peace and security structures.

Peace Operations Training Centre (POTC) is organising its newest pilot training course titled »Climate Change, Peace and Security«, which will take place back-to-back with the 12th Africa Day International Conference between 24-26 of April in Slovenia.
Climate change is a security issue and a global threat multiplier. While climate change does not directly cause violent conflict, its impacts can exacerbate its drivers. Climate change can undermine livelihoods, increase mass migration, and weaken the governance and stability of states, particularly conflict-affected fragile states and territories. The European Union (EU), NATO and the UN have actively been calling for peace operations to assess climate risks and establish management strategies that incorporate these risks. With this in mind, POTC developed a comprehensive training programme that covers different aspects of the environmental peacebuilding, climate and security nexus at an introductory level. After its successful completion, the participants will be able to understand and analyse climate-related security risks and be better prepared to contribute to crisis prevention and sustaining peace.

Peace Operations Training Centre (POTC) is organising a training on Gender Equality and Gender Mainstreaming in Peace Operations and Missions, which will take place in person at Jable Castle, Slovenia, from 21 March to 23 March 2023.
The training is intended for police, civilian and military personnel, who plan to join international missions and operations.
Violent conflict disproportionately affects women and girls and intensifies pre-existing gender inequalities and discrimination. Women are also active agents of peace in armed conflict although their role as key players and agents of peace is still poorly recognized. Acknowledging and integrating different understandings, experiences, and capabilities of women into all aspects of peace operations is essential for the success of any peacekeeping efforts and for sustaining peace.
The lectures, workshops and participatory activities will cover the basic topics of gender mainstreaming. Participants will gain skills and knowledge that will help them engage all possible stakeholders regarding gender equality and include the perspectives of women in their efforts to build sustainable peace.
There are vacant seats still available, so we encourage everyone interested to apply here by the 26th of February 2023.
Additional information:
- the training is free of charge.
- Travel and accommodation costs are not covered by organizers. However, we will provide support and recommendations.
